Aspiring Zaka West MP banks on young voters

By Tafadzwa Muranganwa.
Aspiring legislator Elvis Mugari says he is hopeful of scooping the Zaka West Parliamentary seat from current National Assembly representative Vincent Mawere because youths now prefer younger candidates who are in touch with their needs.
The youthful Mugari said he decided to stand as an independent candidate after realising that most political parties in the country are shutting youths out when it comes to assuming Parliamentary and local authority seats.
“My decision to stand for the Zaka West seat in the coming plebiscite as an independent candidate was compelled by most political parties’ attitude of sideling youths to become leaders in their own right.
“Most young people in my area are now tired of being fed with fake promises and lies by old politicians so they are now turning to their peers to lead them because we understand their woes better,” he said.
Young people have been touted as the game-changer in the impending 2018 general elections owing to their numbers.
According to provisional registration statistics from Zimbabwe Electoral Commission youths constitute about 43 percent of total registered voters in the country under the biometric voter registration system which seeks among other things to clean the voters roll.
Mugari joins a growing list of young people dominated by females who have lined up themselves to contest in the Parliamentary elections as independent candidates.
Some of the young people vying for Parliament include lawyer-cum politician Fadzai Mahere, political activist Linda Masarira, Rairo Gunguwo and Vimbai Musvaburi among others who are yet to come to announce themselves.
In his manifesto, Mugari says he wants to introduce community banking to help ease issues of access to funds for income generating projects by youths, contract farming for farmers, access to solar energy by families and properly developed growth points.
