Of By-Elections and Bread and Butter

By Portia Sigauke

As the Parliament of Zimbabwe resumed sitting this week the issue of holding by-elections came under the spotlight as the MP for Kuwadzana East, Nelson Chamisa, felt that Parliament was continuously dealing with by-elections whilst there is unfinished business that needs to be attended to.
On that one l fully support Mr. Chamisa as there are so many more urgent issues that need to be addressed rather than by-election that seem to be unending.
Since the July 2013 elections were held more than forty MPs have been fired from Parliament due to political differences.
One question that l always ask myself is this, “are the legislators meant to serve the interests of a political party or the interests of the people from the constituency that they’re representing?”
As Parliament resumes there are two National Assembly vacancies that need to be filled including Mhondoro-Mubaira constituency and Mashonaland West. By-elections are expected to be held on March 5.
Like any other election there are so many resources that need to be used and the question is where are those resources coming from whilst Government is struggling to avail funds to support hungry provinces like Matebeleland North and Midlands province?
